From the good old, kinda crappy, New York Times,
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/07/world/americas/07bolivia.html For those unfamiliar with him. He is the first indigenous president of that impoverished and racially divided country. Let me put a finer point on it: the first indigenous president since it was conquered by the Spanish 470 years ago. That's right, almost half a millennium. Life all Latin American leaders who threaten U.S. colonialism of South America, he is not particularly well-liked in America, often put into the same camp as Hugo Chavez. But like many of those countries who are still seeking after 500 years to become their own country, it is often a messy and violent enterprise. Morales has sought equal rights for native peoples in Bolivia, raised the minimum wage, criticized fair trade agreements, nationalized the national gas industry, and sought to deflect U.S. attempts to put native Bolivian's out of the coca growing business, often the only means of economic stability for poor regions. In any case, it will be interesting to see how the U.S. powers-that-be respond.Posted via email from Joshua’s posterous
